Effective coverage = sensor count × π × radius² × (1 − overlap rate) × environmental effectiveness.

What the result means

The main result is a planning estimate of distinct, usable coverage after two reductions. It is not a guarantee that every point inside the calculated area has reliable sensing or communication.

Circular footprints are an approximation. Verify placement with manufacturer specifications, field measurements, and local radio or sensing conditions.

Example calculation

For 40 sensors with a 25 m radius, 20% overlap, and 85% environmental effectiveness, nominal combined area is 78,540 m² and estimated effective coverage is 53,407 m², or 5.34 hectares.

Tips for better results

  • Use the smaller of sensing range and communication range when both matter.
  • Estimate overlap from an actual layout rather than guessing from sensor count.
  • Lower the effectiveness factor for walls, dense vegetation, or interference.
  • Do not subtract overlap twice if the radius input is already an effective spacing value.
  • Validate critical blind spots with a site survey.
