How to use this calculator

  1. Count deployment sites and sensing points per site.
  2. Increase sensors per point only when true redundancy is required.
  3. Add uninstalled replacement stock as a spare percentage.
  4. Use a tested gateway capacity and separate gateway reserve.

Formula

Installed sensors = Sites × Points per site × Sensors per point
Procured sensors = ceil(Installed × (1 + Spare allowance))
Total gateways = ceil(ceil(Installed ÷ Gateway capacity) × (1 + Gateway reserve))

What the result means

Procured sensors include installed units and uninstalled spares. Gateways are sized from installed sensors, then increased by a reserve allowance.

Radio range, building layout, channel limits, message rate, backhaul, power, and vendor-specific concurrency limits may require more gateways than device count alone.

Example calculation

For 120 sites with 6 points and one sensor per point, 720 sensors are installed. An 8% spare allowance gives 778 sensors to procure. At 100 sensors per gateway, eight active plus one reserve means nine gateways.

Should one sensor measuring several values count as several sensing points?

Count physical sensor devices, not data fields, when one device provides multiple measurements.

Can vendor maximum gateway capacity be used directly?

Use a reliable tested capacity that accounts for message rate, protocol overhead, and local radio conditions.

Why are sensor and gateway totals rounded up?

Procurement and installation require whole devices, so fractional requirements are rounded upward.
