How to use this calculator

Formula

Cube utilization = cargo volume ÷ internal volume × 100%
Weight utilization = cargo weight ÷ maximum payload × 100%
Overall utilization = higher of the two

What the result means

Overall utilization uses the tighter constraint. It does not mean that every remaining cubic meter can accept cargo, because weight or placement may already prevent additions.

Values above 100% flag an entered limit exceedance; they are not clipped so the size of the overage stays visible.

Example calculation

Loading 54 m³ and 18,000 kg into a 67.5 m³ container with a 26,500 kg payload gives 80.0% cube utilization and 67.9% weight utilization. Overall utilization is 80.0%.

Tips for better results

  • Use actual loaded cube, including packaging where relevant.
  • Do not treat remaining cube as usable when payload is already tight.
  • Investigate values above 100% before dispatch.
  • Confirm load distribution and securing independently of aggregate utilization.

Frequently asked questions

Why is overall container utilization the higher of cube and weight utilization?

The higher ratio identifies the constraint closer to its limit and therefore the one restricting additional cargo.

Can cube utilization be over 100 percent?

Yes, if entered cargo volume exceeds internal volume; the overage signals inconsistent or overloaded input.

Does remaining volume guarantee another carton will fit?

No. Shape, orientation, door clearance, and weight can make the remaining cube unusable.

Should cargo weight include pallets and dunnage?

Include every item counted against the container payload under your loading rules.

Is low weight utilization a problem for light cargo?

Not necessarily. A light load can legitimately be space-bound, so interpret both ratios together.
