Formula

Cases per layer = max(floor(Pₗ ÷ Cₗ) × floor(Pw ÷ Cw), floor(Pₗ ÷ Cw) × floor(Pw ÷ Cₗ))
Layers = floor((maximum height − pallet height) ÷ case height)
Capacity = min(cases per layer × layers, floor(payload ÷ case weight))

What the result means

Capacity is the smaller of the geometric stack and weight limit. The layer count tests two uniform orientations but does not model interlocking or mixed patterns.

Confirm compression strength, overhang rules, stability, center of gravity, wrap, and equipment ratings before using the load.

Example calculation

A 1.2 m × 1.0 m pallet fits 9 cases per layer in the better orientation. The 1.45 m available case height permits 5 layers, producing 45 geometric positions. Weight permits 83 cases, so capacity is 45 cases.

Tips for better results

  • Use outside case dimensions including bulges or protective corners.
  • Subtract the actual empty pallet height from the loaded-height limit.
  • Check carton compression strength before increasing layers.
  • Treat interlocking, overhang, and mixed-SKU patterns as separate engineering checks.
