How to use this calculator

Formula

Position utilization = loaded positions ÷ usable positions × 100
Weight utilization = loaded weight ÷ payload capacity × 100
Effective utilization = max(position %, weight %)

What the result means

Effective utilization uses the more heavily consumed resource. A result over 100% means at least one declared capacity is exceeded.

Usable positions should already reflect pallet dimensions, stacking rules, axle distribution, segregation, and any blocked space.

Example calculation

Using 22 of 26 positions gives 84.62% position utilization. Loading 16,500 lb against 24,000 lb gives 68.75% weight utilization. The effective result is therefore 84.62%, governed by pallet positions.

Tips for better results

  • Use route or shift averages from the same reporting period so the inputs describe one operating pattern.
  • Separate unusual disruptions from routine operations before treating the result as a planning baseline.
  • Recalculate after changing vehicle mix, labor rules, loading methods, or customer time commitments.
