Fleet Routing Capacity Calculator

Estimate how much delivery work a fleet can complete in a shift under a repeatable route plan. The calculator checks three practical limits—available vehicle-hours, stop capacity, and payload—and reports the smallest shipment count as usable routing capacity. That constraint-based view is more useful than multiplying vehicles by stops alone because a route can run out of shift time or carrying capacity first.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter vehicles and operating hours available in the planning period.
  2. Enter average round-trip route cycle time and stops per route.
  3. Describe shipment density per stop and average shipment weight.
  4. Calculate; the lower of stop and payload capacity is the usable result.

Formula

Route cycles = vehicles × floor(operating hours ÷ cycle hours)
Stop capacity = floor(cycles × stops/route × shipments/stop)
Payload capacity = floor(cycles × payload ÷ average shipment weight)
Usable capacity = min(stop capacity, payload capacity)

What the result means

The result is the number of whole average shipments the fleet can route without exceeding the entered cycle, stop, or payload assumptions.

This estimate assumes similar route cycles. Geographic imbalance, appointment windows, driver rules, maintenance, and vehicle-specific payload limits may reduce executable capacity.

Example calculation

Twelve vehicles working 9 hours with 3-hour cycles can complete 36 cycles. At 8 stops and 1.2 shipments per stop, stop capacity is 345 shipments. Payload capacity is 523 shipments, so usable capacity is 345 shipments.

Tips for better results

  • Use route or shift averages from the same reporting period so the inputs describe one operating pattern.
  • Separate unusual disruptions from routine operations before treating the result as a planning baseline.
  • Recalculate after changing vehicle mix, labor rules, loading methods, or customer time commitments.
  • Keep raw operating data at full precision and round only the displayed result.

Why are partial fleet route cycles excluded?

A route that cannot finish within the available operating time is not counted as completed capacity.

What should I use for average route cycle time?

Use dispatch-to-return time, including normal loading, driving, service, and return activity for the same route type.

How do delivery windows affect fleet routing capacity?

Tight windows often increase cycle time or reduce stops per route. Reflect that change in those inputs rather than adding unsupported capacity.

Can shipments per stop be a decimal?

Yes. A decimal average is useful when some stops receive multiple shipments and others receive one.

Does payload capacity account for cube or floor space?

No. If space is more restrictive than weight, translate that limit into an equivalent shipment count before relying on the result.
