How to use this calculator

  1. Use the same operating period for all six inputs.
  2. Enter used and available vehicle-hours.
  3. Enter total loaded weight versus summed usable payload.
  4. Enter completed stops versus planned stop capacity and calculate.

Formula

Time utilization = used vehicle-hours ÷ available vehicle-hours × 100
Payload utilization = loaded weight ÷ available payload × 100
Stop utilization = completed stops ÷ stop capacity × 100
Binding utilization = maximum of the three

What the result means

The highest resource percentage is the binding utilization. The separate measures reveal unused capacity that cannot necessarily offset pressure on another resource.

A low payload percentage does not mean more stops will fit if vehicle-hours or appointment capacity are already constrained.

Example calculation

Used time is 82 ÷ 96 = 85.42%. Payload use is 68,000 ÷ 96,000 = 70.83%. Stop use is 110 ÷ 128 = 85.94%. The binding result is therefore 85.94%, based on stop capacity.

Tips for better results

  • Use route or shift averages from the same reporting period so the inputs describe one operating pattern.
  • Separate unusual disruptions from routine operations before treating the result as a planning baseline.
  • Recalculate after changing vehicle mix, labor rules, loading methods, or customer time commitments.
  • Keep raw operating data at full precision and round only the displayed result.

Why does fleet routing utilization use the highest resource percentage?

The most heavily used resource is the first constraint likely to block additional routed work.

Can used vehicle-hours exceed available vehicle-hours?

Yes in the data, but a result over 100% signals overtime, unplanned resources, or inconsistent definitions that should be reviewed.

How should spare vehicles be treated in available hours?

Include only hours that could realistically be dispatched in the period, considering maintenance, staffing, and operating restrictions.

Can payload utilization be low while fleet utilization is high?

Yes. Routes may be limited by time or stop commitments even when vehicles carry relatively little weight.

Should canceled stops count as completed stops?

No, unless your metric explicitly treats attempted service as completion. Keep the numerator aligned with the capacity definition.
