Formula

Takt time = Net available production time ÷ Customer demand

Net available time = shift length − planned breaks. Required hourly rate = 60 ÷ takt time.

What the result means

Takt time is the maximum average production interval needed to match customer demand. It is a demand pacing target, not the measured speed of a machine or line.

Remove only planned unavailable time. Handle unplanned downtime through capacity planning or OEE rather than subtracting it twice.

Example calculation

An 8-hour shift has 480 minutes. After 60 planned minutes are removed, 420 minutes remain. For demand of 140 units, takt time is 420 ÷ 140 = 3.00 minutes per unit.
