What the result means
The main result is the theoretical whole-sheet count by face area. Actual layout, seams, stagger, offcuts, layers, fire assemblies, and damage can increase the order.
Verify board type, thickness, fastening schedule, finish level, and coverage figures against drawings and product instructions.
Example calculation
With 3,000 sq ft of walls, 1,000 sq ft of ceiling, and 300 sq ft of openings, net area is 3,700 sq ft. Using 4 × 8 sheets gives ceil(3,700 ÷ 32) = 116 sheets. At 32 sq ft/lb and 100 sq ft/gal, the estimates are 115.6 lb of screws and 37 gal of compound.
Tips for better results
- Lay out sheets by wall when seam placement matters.
- Do not deduct tiny openings when their offcuts are unlikely to be reusable.
- Use product-specific screw and compound coverage.
- Calculate multiple board layers as separate full areas.
Frequently asked questions
Does the calculator include drywall waste?
No. It rounds up the area result to whole sheets but does not add a separate cutting or breakage percentage.
Should I deduct every electrical box?
Usually small penetrations do not reduce purchased sheets; deduct only openings that materially remove board area.
How do I calculate a two-layer assembly?
Enter the applicable surface area for each layer or multiply the affected area before entry.
Why are screw and compound rates editable?
Fastening patterns, framing, board thickness, finish level, and products change coverage.
Are 4 × 12 sheets more efficient than 4 × 8 sheets?
They may reduce seams on suitable layouts, but handling, access, waste, and crew capability also matter.
