Formula

Base studs = ceil[(wall length × 12) ÷ spacing] + 1

Plate length = wall length × plate runs. Sheathing sheets = ceil[(length × height − openings) ÷ sheet coverage].

What the result means

The stud count is a base layout count along continuous wall length. It deliberately does not guess the extra framing required by corners, headers, jack studs, or intersecting walls.

Use drawings and local code for final member sizes, grades, headers, hold-downs, and opening details.

Example calculation

For 160 ft of 8-ft wall with 16-in spacing, the base count is ceil(1,920 ÷ 16) + 1 = 121 studs. Three plate runs require 480 linear ft. After 120 sq ft of openings, 1,160 sq ft requires 37 sheets at 32 sq ft each.

  • Measure each wall line from the latest framing plan.
  • Count opening and corner framing separately.
  • Check sheet orientation before treating nominal area as usable coverage.
  • Apply a project-specific waste allowance after the base quantity.

Frequently asked questions

Does the stud total include doors and windows?

No. It is a base spacing count; add king studs, jack studs, headers, sills, and cripples from the opening details.

Why are openings deducted only from sheathing?

The simplified stud formula uses continuous wall layout; opening framing cannot be estimated accurately from opening area alone.

Are both wall ends counted?

Yes. The formula adds one stud after dividing the wall length by spacing.

Can I use metric measurements?

This version accepts feet, inches, and square feet; convert metric dimensions before entry.

Does the sheathing result include waste?

No. It rounds up to whole sheets but does not add a separate cutting or damage allowance.
