Rideshare Driver Required Rate Calculator

Find the gross earning rate needed to cover operating costs, hold back a tax and contingency reserve, and still reach a take-home goal. This calculator distinguishes online time from paid time, which makes the result useful when unpaid waiting between trips is a meaningful part of the workweek.

Calculator

Income goal and workable hours
USD/wk
Weekly amount wanted after costs and reserve.
USD/wk
Fuel, charging, maintenance, tolls, or supplies.
%
Share of gross revenue held back.
hr/wk
Total time logged in and available.
%
Share of online time expected to generate paid work.

How to use this calculator

  1. Set a take-home goal for the same period as your costs and hours.
  2. Add expected operating costs for that period.
  3. Choose the share of gross revenue to reserve.
  4. Enter online hours and the expected paid-time share, then calculate.

Formula

Gross revenue needed = (take-home goal + costs) ÷ (1 − reserve rate)
Paid hours = online hours × paid-time share
Required paid-hour rate = gross revenue needed ÷ paid hours

What the result means

The paid-hour rate is the average gross revenue required while actively earning. The online-hour rate spreads the same goal across all logged-in time and is useful for shift-level tracking.

This model treats the reserve as a share of gross revenue and assumes all entered costs are paid from gross revenue before take-home pay.

Example calculation

A $1000 take-home goal plus $320 in costs with a 28% reserve requires $1833.33 gross. At 40 online hours and a 60% paid-time share, that is $76.39 per paid hour.

Tips for better results

  • Use actual operating costs from several weeks.
  • Include unpaid waiting when measuring online hours.
  • Run separate scenarios for peak and off-peak periods.
  • Check whether incentives are already included in gross revenue.
  • Raise the target rate when demand reduces paid-time share.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the reserve divided out instead of added to the goal?

Because the reserve is a percentage of gross revenue. Dividing by the retained share finds the gross amount needed after that percentage is withheld.

Is required rate based on online time or paid time?

The main result is per paid hour. A separate result shows gross revenue needed per online hour.

Where should fuel and maintenance be entered?

Include expected weekly operating costs in the cost input without double-counting amounts already included in the take-home goal.

Can I use this for a single shift?

Yes. Use shift-level goals, costs, and hours consistently instead of weekly values.

Does the result guarantee enough trips?

No. It gives the rate required under your assumptions; actual demand and available offers may not support it.
