Formula

Energy = ½ × club mass × clubhead speed². Power proxy = Energy ÷ downswing time. Power-to-weight proxy = Power proxy ÷ body mass.

What the result means

Use the power-to-weight proxy to compare your own swings when club mass, timing method, and launch-monitor setup remain consistent. It excludes body segments, rotational dynamics, strike quality, and energy transfer to the ball.

The calculation is a simplified physics proxy—not a laboratory power measurement, coaching diagnosis, or safe-speed target.

Example calculation

At 100 mph, 180 lb, a 320 g club, and a 0.30-second downswing, estimated club kinetic energy is 320 J. The power proxy is 1,067 W and the body-mass-normalized proxy is 13.1 W/kg.

  • Do not chase a ratio by unsafe weight loss.

Is this a direct measurement of golf swing power?

No. It estimates club kinetic energy and divides by downswing time, so it is a simplified proxy.

Why is Handicap Index included if it does not change the result?

It provides performance context for saved or compared readings without pretending handicap determines swing physics.

Does a lighter golfer automatically get a better ratio?

The same power proxy at lower body mass produces a higher ratio, but that does not automatically mean better golf performance.

Can I compare driver and iron results?

You can, but different club masses and swing purposes make direct comparisons less useful than tracking one club consistently.

Why does clubhead speed affect energy so strongly?

Kinetic energy is proportional to speed squared, so a small speed increase produces a larger energy increase.
