Formula

Total tCO₂e = (electricity × factor + fuel × factor + travel × factor) ÷ 1,000

What the result means

The result is an activity-based estimate for the three included sources. It can serve as a transparent starting boundary, but it is not a complete organizational inventory unless all material sources are represented.

Use current factors from an authoritative inventory source and document their year, geography, units, and greenhouse-gas coverage. This tool does not assign formal Scope 1, 2, or 3 classifications.

Example calculation

For 500,000 kWh at 0.4 kg CO₂e/kWh, 20,000 liters at 2.68 kg CO₂e/liter, and 100,000 km at 0.15 kg CO₂e/km, the estimated footprint is 268.60 tCO₂e.

Why are the emissions factors editable?

Factors vary by geography, year, fuel, travel mode, and reporting method, so the user must supply values appropriate to the inventory.

Does this calculate a complete corporate greenhouse-gas inventory?

Not by itself. It includes only the three activity sources entered and may omit other material Scope 1, 2, or 3 sources.

How are kilograms converted to metric tons?

The summed kilograms of CO₂e are divided by 1,000 to produce metric tons.

Can market-based electricity factors be used?

Yes, if the factor and underlying instrument are appropriate for the chosen reporting method and are documented consistently.

Should avoided emissions be subtracted from this footprint?

Usually they should be reported separately unless the governing accounting framework explicitly permits a deduction.
