Formula

Target emissions = baseline × (1 − target %)
Linear annual cut = absolute reduction ÷ years
Compound annual decline = 1 − (target ÷ baseline)1/years

What the result means

The target-year result is the maximum footprint consistent with the entered absolute reduction. The linear and compound rates are two planning views, not interchangeable accounting methods.

Example calculation

A 10,000 tCO₂e baseline with a 42% reduction over 7 years produces a 5,800 tCO₂e target, a 4,200 tCO₂e absolute cut, a 600 tCO₂e linear annual cut, and about a 7.48% compounded annual decline.

Is the target reduction absolute or intensity-based?

This calculator uses an absolute reduction from the entered baseline emissions.

What is the difference between the linear and compound annual reduction?

The linear path removes an equal number of tons each year, while the compound path applies an equal percentage decline to the remaining emissions.

Can the target be a 100% reduction?

Yes. The target-year result becomes zero, although the equivalent compound decline is shown as 100% for planning purposes.

Does the result include carbon offsets?

No. It calculates an emissions reduction target and does not automatically count offsets as operational reductions.

What if the company changes size after the base year?

Formal programs may require a base-year recalculation or separate intensity analysis; apply the rules of the selected reporting framework.
