Formula

Batch kg CO₂e = material × material factor + energy × energy factor + freight activity × freight factor
Per-unit footprint = batch kg CO₂e ÷ good units

What the result means

The main result is the included carbon footprint per good unit. Source shares help prioritize data improvement and reduction work within this simplified boundary.

Excluded stages may include packaging, capital equipment, warehousing, use, maintenance, end of life, land-use change, and supplier processes not represented by the material factor.

Example calculation

A batch using 1,000 kg of material at 2.5 kg CO₂e/kg, 5,000 kWh at 0.4 kg CO₂e/kWh, and 2,000 tonne-km at 0.1 kg CO₂e/tonne-km totals 4,700 kg CO₂e. Across 1,000 good units, that is 4.70 kg CO₂e per unit.

Is this a complete product life-cycle assessment?

No. It estimates only the material, manufacturing-energy, and freight stages entered.

Why should I use good units instead of started units?

Dividing by saleable good output allocates scrap and process losses to the products actually produced.

How is freight activity in tonne-kilometers calculated?

Multiply shipment mass in metric tons by the distance traveled in kilometers for each freight leg, then sum the legs.

Can supplier-specific material data be entered?

Yes, if the factor has compatible units, scope, and product boundary and is appropriate for the reporting purpose.

What happens when every activity value is zero?

The batch and per-unit estimates are zero; source shares are reported as zero rather than producing a division error.
