Formula

Target intensity = baseline intensity × (1 − target %)
Annual avoided tCO₂e = (baseline − target) × annual units ÷ 1,000
Compound annual decline = 1 − (target ÷ baseline)1/years

What the result means

The main result is the target carbon intensity for each product unit. Annual avoided emissions are volume-dependent and should be updated if production changes.

The calculation assumes the same product function and life-cycle boundary at baseline and target. It does not account for rebound effects, changes in product lifetime, or avoided emissions outside the inventory.

Example calculation

A 12 kg CO₂e product with a 30% reduction target has an 8.40 kg CO₂e target intensity. At 100,000 units, the difference equals 360 tCO₂e per year, requiring about a 6.89% compounded annual intensity decline over 5 years.

Can I enter a 100% product reduction target?

Yes for arithmetic, producing a zero target intensity, though practical and claim requirements must be evaluated separately.

What functional unit should I use?

Use the unit that represents the product's defined function and keep it consistent between baseline and target.

Does the annual avoided result include future volume growth?

No. It uses the single annual production volume entered and does not forecast changing volume.
