Formula

Target emissions = Baseline × (1 − Target %). Gross reduction gap = max(0, Current emissions − Target emissions). Annual reduction needed = Gap ÷ Years remaining.

What the result means

The main result is the operational emissions reduction still needed to reach the gross target. Planned offsets are shown in context but do not count toward the gross reduction gap.

If your commitment explicitly permits a net target, assess offset eligibility separately. Many target frameworks distinguish emissions reductions from neutralization or compensation.

Example calculation

A 40% target from a 10,000 t baseline sets a 6,000 t target level. Current emissions of 7,800 t leave a 1,800 t CO₂e reduction gap, or 360 t per year over five years.

Frequently asked questions

Do planned offsets count toward the reduction target?

Not in this calculator's gross reduction gap. They are kept separate to avoid treating compensation as direct emissions reduction.

What happens if current emissions are already below the target?

The remaining reduction gap is zero and the result notes the amount by which the target has been exceeded.

Can the target percentage be 100%?

Yes. That models a gross target level of zero, although achieving it may not be technically feasible.

Which baseline year should I use?

Use the baseline defined in the governing target, inventory policy, or public commitment.

Why divide the gap by years remaining?

It provides a simple linear annual reduction pace; actual pathways may front-load or back-load reductions.
