Formula

Gross emissions = Σ(Activity × Emission factor). Remaining balance = max(0, Gross emissions − Offsets retired).

What the result means

Gross emissions represent the three entered activity sources before offsets. The balance subtracts retired offsets but does not change the underlying gross footprint.

Emission factors vary by location, technology, fuel, cabin class, and methodology. Use factors from the reporting framework that governs your inventory.

Example calculation

120,000 kWh × 0.0004 plus 18,000 gal × 0.00889 plus 85,000 passenger-mi × 0.00015 equals 220.77 t CO₂e gross. After 75 offsets, 145.77 t remains.

  • Keep the reporting boundary and period consistent across every input.

Do offsets reduce the gross emissions footprint?

No. Gross emissions remain the same; retired offsets are shown separately against the reported balance.

What unit should each emission factor use?

Enter metric tonnes CO2e per displayed activity unit: per kWh, gallon, or passenger-mile.

Can I leave an activity source at zero?

Yes. Set both the unused activity and its factor to zero or leave the factor unchanged with zero activity.

What if offsets exceed gross emissions?

The remaining balance is floored at zero, and excess offsets are shown separately rather than as negative emissions.
