Formula

Required Mbps = users × concurrency × Mbps per active user × (1 + overhead) × (1 + headroom)

Percentages are converted to decimal multipliers. The result is an aggregate directional estimate.

What the result means

The result is a target aggregate link rate for the modeled busy period. Compare it with available interface tiers and consider redundancy, traffic direction, and service-level objectives before selecting equipment.

Actual traffic is bursty and asymmetric. Validate assumptions with measured percentiles and account for failover paths, oversubscription, and upstream limits.

Example calculation

With 1,000 users, 35% concurrency, 8 Mbps per active user, 15% overhead, and 25% headroom, payload demand is 2.8 Gbps and the planned requirement is 4.03 Gbps.

  • Use measured busy-hour concurrency when available.
  • Model upstream and downstream separately if traffic is asymmetric.
  • Reserve headroom for bursts and maintenance, not just annual growth.

Frequently asked questions

Is Mbps per active user the subscribed access speed?

No. It is the average throughput expected from a user who is active during the modeled peak, which is usually different from the advertised access tier.

Why add protocol overhead to fiber bandwidth?

Frames, encapsulation, control traffic, and operational variation consume capacity beyond application payload, so the overhead input converts payload demand into a link-planning estimate.

Does this calculate upload and download bandwidth separately?

No. It produces one aggregate direction. Run separate scenarios with direction-specific demand when upstream and downstream differ materially.

How should I choose peak concurrency?

Use busy-hour monitoring or a documented forecast. Concurrency is the share of all users simultaneously generating the entered active-user demand.

Should I round the result to the next fiber interface speed?

For procurement, compare the result with available interface and service tiers while also checking redundancy and acceptable utilization. The calculator does not automatically prescribe a tier.
