Formula

Usable Mbps = link Gbps × 1,000 × target utilization × (1 − overhead)
Active users = floor(usable Mbps ÷ Mbps per active user)
Subscribers = floor(active users ÷ concurrency)

What the result means

Active-user capacity is the primary engineering result. Subscriber capacity is a planning translation that depends strongly on the concurrency assumption and should be validated with busy-hour measurements.

This is an average-demand model, not a guarantee for every user. Traffic bursts, QoS, failover, application mix, and bottlenecks elsewhere can reduce experienced performance.

Example calculation

A 10 Gbps link at 70% target utilization with 12% overhead provides 6,160 Mbps of usable payload. At 12 Mbps per active user it supports 513 concurrent users, equivalent to 1,710 subscribers at 30% concurrency.

Operating below full capacity preserves room for bursts, queue control, growth, and service variation. Choose a ceiling that matches your performance objectives.

How is subscriber capacity different from concurrent user capacity?

Concurrent capacity counts users active at once. Subscriber capacity estimates the larger registered population when only the entered percentage is active during the peak.

Does protocol overhead reduce or increase usable capacity?

It reduces the nominal link rate available to application payload. The calculator subtracts the entered overhead after applying target utilization.

Can this estimate capacity during a fiber link failure?

Yes, enter the capacity that remains in the failure state rather than normal aggregate capacity, then compare the supported users.

What per-user bandwidth should I use?
