Formula

Volume dilution factor = final volume ÷ initial volume; final concentration = initial concentration × initial volume × recovery fraction ÷ final volume.

What the result means

A dilution factor below 1 indicates concentration because the final volume is smaller. Its reciprocal is shown as the concentration factor.

The estimate assumes uniform starting concentration and uses recovery efficiency to represent material lost during centrifugation, transfer, or resuspension.

Example calculation

Reducing 50 mL at 2 mg/mL to 5 mL with 90% recovery gives a 0.1× volume dilution, a 10× volume concentration factor, 90 mg recovered mass, and 18 mg/mL final concentration.
