Formula

Doublings = log₂(N₂/N₁); Doubling time = elapsed time ÷ doublings

Each corrected population N equals measured count × dilution factor.

What the result means

Doubling time describes exponential growth over the measured interval. It should not be extrapolated through lag, stationary, or death phases without additional observations.

This theoretical estimate assumes accurate transfers and complete mixing; laboratory results should be verified with appropriate controls and measurement uncertainty.

Counts of 120 and 960 at equal 1:1000 dilution correspond to 120,000 and 960,000. That is 3 doublings over 6 hours, so doubling time is 2 hours.
