Formula

Capacity = floor[min(D ÷ (d × n), S ÷ s)]

D is available diluent, d is diluent per step, n is steps, S is source sample, and s is source sample per series.

What the result means

Capacity counts only complete sample series. It excludes overage for dead volume, repeats, controls, standards, and accidental loss.

This theoretical estimate assumes accurate transfers and complete mixing; laboratory results should be verified with appropriate controls and measurement uncertainty.

Example calculation

With 500 mL diluent, 9 mL per step, 6 steps, 25 mL sample, and 1 mL per series, diluent supports 9 series while sample supports 25. Capacity is therefore 9 series and 54 vessels.

Frequently asked questions

Does capacity include controls and blank tubes?

No. Add those separately or reduce the available material entered.

Why is capacity rounded down?

A partial series cannot complete every planned dilution step.

Does each later transfer consume more source sample?

No. The model counts source sample only for the first aliquot of each series.

How do I allow for pipette dead volume?

Subtract the expected dead volume from available material before calculating.

Can the calculator plan different step volumes?

No. It assumes the same diluent volume at every step in a series.
