Plan how many samples a serial-dilution setup can support from available diluent and transfer material. The estimate identifies the limiting resource, total vessels, material used, and leftover capacity for a repeated dilution protocol.
D is available diluent, d is diluent per step, n is steps, S is source sample, and s is source sample per series.
Capacity counts only complete sample series. It excludes overage for dead volume, repeats, controls, standards, and accidental loss.
This theoretical estimate assumes accurate transfers and complete mixing; laboratory results should be verified with appropriate controls and measurement uncertainty.
