Formula

Availability = run time ÷ planned time
Performance = (ideal cycle time × total count) ÷ run time
Quality = good count ÷ total count
OEE = availability × performance × quality

What the result means

OEE shows how much of the theoretical planned-time opportunity became good production. Energy intensity supplies a separate resource view.

An OEE above 100% usually means the ideal cycle time, counts, or time boundary is inconsistent.

Example calculation

For 480 planned minutes, 45 minutes of downtime, a 0.5-minute ideal cycle, 760 total units, and 735 good units, availability is 90.63%, performance is 87.36%, quality is 96.71%, and OEE is 76.56%. At 950 kWh, energy intensity is 1.293 kWh per good unit.

Tips for better results

  • Use measurements and production totals from the same defined scope.
  • Replace default assumptions with project or facility records.
  • Keep unrounded values through the calculation and round only the final purchasing or reporting figure.
  • Record unusual operating or site conditions beside the result.
  • Recalculate when dimensions, schedule, crew, equipment, or process conditions change.

Frequently asked questions

Is energy consumption part of the OEE formula?

No. Standard OEE multiplies availability, performance, and quality; energy intensity is reported separately.

Can factory energy OEE exceed 100 percent?

Standard OEE should not. A result above 100% points to inconsistent input data, often the ideal cycle time.

Should breaks be removed from planned production time?

Remove only time your site defines as not scheduled for production, and apply that rule consistently.

Do rejected units affect both performance and quality?

Total count is used for performance, while good count divided by total count determines quality.

Why track kWh per good unit next to OEE?

It reveals whether operational effectiveness improved while energy required for each saleable unit rose or fell.
