Orchard Yield Energy Cost Calculator

Estimate orchard operating energy cost for irrigation pumps, fans, cooling, or other equipment. Enter electrical load, runtime per event, event count, additional energy use, electricity price, and orchard area. The calculator returns total cost, kilowatt-hours, cost per acre, and average cost per event.

Calculator

Planning inputs
kW
Average electrical demand while operating.
hours
Hours the main equipment runs each event.
events
Irrigation cycles or other operating events.
kWh
Other orchard energy not captured by the main load.
$/kWh
Variable delivered energy price.
acres
Area served by the entered energy use.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the operating scale and baseline values.
  2. Adjust rates or percentages to match the scenario you want to test.
  3. Select Calculate and review the main result.
  4. Use the secondary results to check capacity, efficiency, or unit economics.

Formula

Main energy = kilowatts × hours per event × events. Total energy = main energy + additional kWh. Cost = total energy × electricity price.

What the result means

The main result is variable electricity expense for the modeled activity. Per-acre and per-event results help compare blocks or schedules.

Fixed fees, demand charges, fuel, power-factor penalties, and time-of-use price changes are excluded unless folded into the entered rate or additional energy.

Example calculation

An 18 kW load running 8 hours for 24 events uses 3,456 kWh. Adding 500 kWh gives 3,956 kWh; at $0.15/kWh, cost is $593.40, or $14.84 per acre over 40 acres.

Tips for better results

  • Use measured average kW rather than motor nameplate horsepower.
  • Separate time-of-use periods when energy prices differ.
  • Track additional cooling or shop loads instead of hiding them in runtime.
  • Compare cost per acre with water delivered or harvested output.

Frequently asked questions

Is equipment load the same as motor horsepower?

No. Enter measured or estimated electrical kilowatts while the equipment operates.

What belongs in additional energy use?

Include electricity not represented by the main load times runtime, such as cooling or controls.

Does the result include utility demand charges?

No. Add demand charges separately unless your entered effective rate already includes them.

What if the number of operating events is zero?

The calculator can still price any additional kilowatt-hours entered.

Can I compare two orchard blocks with this tool?

Yes. Calculate each block separately and compare energy cost per acre using consistent boundaries.
