Formula

Capacity = servers × 60 ÷ service minutes
Estimated wait = Allen–Cunneen-style steady-state delay + visible backlog ÷ team service rate

What the result means

The result is an operational estimate for a variable queue, not a guaranteed individual wait. As utilization approaches 100%, waits become increasingly sensitive to variability.

The approximation assumes broadly independent arrivals and similar servers. Scheduled batches, priorities, rework, and highly variable service times can produce different waits.

Example calculation

Using 5 specialists each completing about 5 cases per hour, hourly capacity exceeds the entered arrival rate. The calculator combines the utilization-based delay with the time needed to clear the entered queue.

Why does the calculator say the queue is unstable?

The entered arrival rate equals or exceeds maximum average service capacity, so a finite steady-state wait cannot be estimated.

Does the visible queue already affect the result?

Yes. Its clearance time is added to the utilization-based waiting estimate.

Can I use a daily average arrival rate?

Hourly rates from similar operating periods are better because daily averages can hide peaks.

What if staff work at different speeds?

Use a weighted average service time or model distinct teams separately when the difference is large.

Is this an exact queueing model?

No. It is a practical approximation; priorities, appointment batching, service variability, and rework can change actual waits.
