Formula

Samples per run = rotor positions − reserved positions
Complete runs = floor(available time ÷ cycle time)
Session capacity = samples per run × complete runs

What the result means

The main result is the maximum number of sample tubes processed per run under the entered balancing reservation.

Always follow the rotor and centrifuge manufacturer's loading, pairing, mass-balance, tube, speed, and inspection requirements.

Example calculation

A 24-position rotor with no reserved positions processes 24 samples per run. With a 20-minute cycle and 120 minutes available, 6 runs process 144 samples or 216 mL at 1.5 mL each.

Tips for better results

  • Include loading, deceleration, and unloading in cycle time.
  • Use a lower tube working volume than nominal volume when required by the tube protocol.
  • Balance opposing loads to the required mass tolerance.
  • Inspect rotors, buckets, adapters, and tubes before use.
  • Schedule cleaning or temperature recovery time when it affects throughput.

Frequently asked questions

Does the calculator determine a safe rotor loading pattern?

No. It estimates capacity only; use the manufacturer-approved symmetric loading pattern for the specific rotor.

Why are balance positions subtracted from capacity?

Balance tubes occupy physical rotor positions even though they do not contain samples.

Can one sample use more than one tube?

Yes. Treat each aliquot tube as one sample position or adjust the sample count outside the calculator.

What should cycle time include?

Include loading, acceleration, spin, deceleration, unloading, and routine turnaround.

Does session capacity include a partial final run?

No. Only complete runs that fit within the available time are counted.
