Formula

Crew productivity = completed wall area ÷ (shift hours × shifts)

Worker productivity = completed area ÷ (crew size × shift hours × shifts).

What the result means

Crew-hour output describes the complete team’s pace. Worker-hour output normalizes for crew size and is useful when examining labor intensity.

Wall area alone does not capture roof, floor, stair, opening, hardware, or detailing complexity. Define the measured scope before comparing rates.

Example calculation

A six-person crew frames 4,800 sq ft in five 8-hour shifts. Crew output is 4,800 ÷ 40 = 120 sq ft per crew-hour; worker output is 20 sq ft per worker-hour.

Tips for better results

  • Use the same completion milestone in every measurement.
  • Separate layout, panelization, and correction time if needed.
  • Note wall height and opening density with each observation.
  • Compare a rolling average instead of one unusually good or bad shift.

Should floor and roof framing be included?

Only if the measured area and historical comparison use the same combined scope; otherwise track them separately.

How is crew-hour different from worker-hour?

One crew-hour is one hour for the whole crew, while worker-hours multiply that time by crew size.

Can I use linear feet instead of square feet?

Not in this version; convert the completed wall scope to square feet for consistent results.

Should reworked framing count as completed area?

Normally no. Use accepted completed area so rework does not inflate output.

Does a larger crew always improve worker productivity?

No. Congestion, supervision, material flow, and work-front limits can reduce efficiency as crew size grows.
